Stepping Stone House

Who we are

Stepping Stone House provides a safe place for children and young people at risk or experiencing homelessness so they can begin to heal, build resilience, create connections, and become the very best they can be.

What we do

Our mission at Stepping Stone House is to reduce youth homelessness in Australia. We offer young people at risk or experiencing homelessness with long-term housing, case management, and support, while delivering a suite of evidence-based programs to target the key developmental areas of education, employment, life skills, wellbeing, community, and independence.

We care for young people through our unique ‘Stepping Stones to Independence’ model, supporting individuals from adolescence to young adulthood and beyond.

35 years of Stepping Stone House

Established in 1989, this year marks the 35th anniversary of Stepping Stone House. In that time, Stepping Stone House has offered safety, education, and care to vulnerable young people aged 12-24. Unlike short-term shelters, we support young people from adolescence through adulthood and beyond. We are in it for the long haul.

With the support of our generous supporters, we have helped over 500 young people become self-sufficient young adults. Through educational development, adventure education, community volunteering, mentoring, and counselling, we equip young people with the self-care and life skills they need to become independent and the best they can be.

Advocating for change

More than just a shelter, Stepping Stone House actively advocates for young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. As part of the Home Stretch campaign, Stepping Stone House CEO, Jason Juretic, led the charge to petition the NSW government to extend the age of out-of-home care support from 18 to 21. This was achieved in November 2022 and marked an enormous change in the support for these young people.

Our vision: End Youth Homelessness in Australia

Australia has a youth homelessness crisis, with facts and statistics that paint a grim picture, and numbers that just keep rising.

At Stepping Stone House, we have a vision to end youth homelessness in Australia.

We’re committed to this vision on the grand scale, amplifying the voices of young people, advocating for change, and fighting for government intervention.

More than that, we are committed to this vision through the individual lives of the young people we support.

Sleep Under the Stars and help light the way to a brighter future for young people experiencing homelessness in Australia.
